EMS Transport Units
EMS Transport Units can be of two types, basic life support (known as Ambulances) or advanced life support (known as Medics). They differ by the equipment carried and the qualifications of the staff on the unit. Ambulances are staffed by two Firefighter/EMTs and respond to basic medical emergencies such as joint injuries, broken bones, back and neck pain, general sickness, cuts and abrasions, and many other non-life threatening medical emergencies. Medics are staffed by one Paramedic and one Firefighter, and carry additional specialty equipment and drugs to support acute medical emergencies including respiratory, obstetrical, cardiac, and diabetic problems, as well as serious physical trauma to the body.
