| EMS Transport Units | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| EMS Transport Units can be of two types, basic life support (known as Ambulances) or advanced life support (known as Medics). They differ by the equipment carried and the qualifications of the staff on the unit. Ambulances are staffed by two Firefighter/EMTs and respond to basic medical emergencies such as joint injuries, broken bones, back and neck pain, general sickness, cuts and abrasions, and many other non-life threatening medical emergencies. Medics are staffed by one Paramedic and one Firefighter, and carry additional specialty equipment and drugs to support acute medical emergencies including respiratory, obstetrical, cardiac, and diabetic problems, as well as serious physical trauma to the body. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

At Fire Station 13, one ambulance is staffed 24 hours a day by a minimum crew of two firefighter/EMTs, employees of Fairfax County. At times, one or two volunteer personnel may also ride this unit.

Our second ambulance stands in reserve should our frontline ambulance require servicing. It is also placed in service by volunteers on a regular basis to supplement County staffing. Reserve staffed ambulances may be staffed by Firefighter/EMTs or EMT-Only members.

| The Rehab Unit is dispatched to large incidents when firefighters require periods of rest between assignments during incident operation. The unit provides heating and cooling for thef firefighters as well as space for recuperation and medical monitoring. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Utilities & Command Vehicles | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Utilities and command vehicles are specialty units used by command officers to respond and operate from during emergencies, at special events to transport personal and equipment, and for general transportation of department personal on department business.There are two utility/command vehicles assigned to Company 13.The first is our 2000 Ford Expedition custom comment and utility vehicle. This unit is utilized as a command vehicle by volunteer staff at special events, as a utility, and also as a reserve vehicle for the County owned command buggies in our battalion.
The second is the Battalion Chief’s command vehicle assigned to BC402. The BC oversees all operations in the battalion to which they are assigned. Fairfax County is divided into seven battalions; our fire station lies in Battalion 2. BC’s hold the rank of Captain II and are employees of Fairfax County. They are fully qualified Advanced Life Support providers. BC402′s buggy is a 2009 Ford F-350 Extended Cab Pickup. |
