Volunteer: Operational Fire & EMS-Only

Serving as a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical technician (EMT) under the Fairfax County system is a demanding, but rewarding experience. Anyone considering this avenue needs to seriously consider the impact it will have on his or her life. This level of commitment can be found in no other volunteer service and is often underestimated. If you are considering this rewarding challenge, you should expect to devote a considerable amount of your personal time for the next three years to make it worthwhile.

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for an operational membership you must meet the following requirements:

• be at least 18 years of age,
• possess a high school diploma or GED,
• be able to pass a physical examination,
• be able to pass a physical abilities test (Firefighter/EMT candidates only), and
• be able to pass a background investigation.

Operational Requirements

To be an operational member, you must commit to the following level of participation:

• stand operational duty for a minimum of 20 hours per month,
• attend 48 hours of training per year,
• work on a Bingo shift once every three weeks,
• attend monthly membership meetings,
• participate in mandatory community outreach events twice a year, and
• assume and fulfill an administrative position.
